Landscaping and Grounds Maintenance

We've collaborated with one of our own neighbors, Catherine Midkiff, a certified Master Gardener, who has shared her wealth of local knowledge to help us all get started with a "Spring Ready" checklist to consider:

  • Lawn Nutrition: Now until early March is the best time to put out pre-emergent weed killer.
  • Bed Maintenance: Weeding the plant beds and spraying them with weed killer.
  • Shrubs and Perennials Maintenance: Trimming away any dead wood or winter debris.
  • Mowing Prep: With the grass about to take off, please ensure you have your lawn mowing arrangements or equipment ready to go for the season.
  • Refreshing Mulch: Adding a fresh layer of mulch not only looks sharp but helps keep weeds down and retains moisture for your plants. Mulch must be refreshed at least once per year.

Looking Ahead: Your April Yard Prep

  • Lawn Nutrition:  Applying fertilizer in April helps as the grass transitions out of dormancy and into the peak growing season.
  • Gardening Tip: Mark your calendars for April 15th! In Zone 7B/8, Tax Day is the traditional "green light" for planting most seeds and summer annuals.
  • Nursery Flowers: Try to wait until after April 15th to plant your nursery flowers in the ground. They are often greenhouse-raised and extra sensitive; waiting until the soil and overnight temperatures are consistently warmer will give your plants the best start!
  • Bermuda Grass Care: Plan to aerate starting in late April, provided it has come out of dormancy and is greening up. Aerating during this transition period ensures your lawn has the best foundation for a thick, healthy summer carpet.
